🏡 THE GIRL FROM THE BLUE HOUSE
Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacán, Mexico, in a family home known as La Casa Azul, or the Blue House. She contracted polio as a child, but grew into a spirited young woman who originally dreamed of studying medicine.
🚌 A LIFE-CHANGING JOURNEY
In 1925, Kahlo suffered devastating injuries when a bus collided with a streetcar in Mexico City. During her long recovery, she began painting seriously, using a specially arranged easel and mirror to create self-portraits from her bed.
🎨 A FACE THAT TOLD A THOUSAND STORIES
Kahlo became famous for vivid self-portraits filled with symbolism, Mexican folk imagery, and deeply personal experiences. Paintings such as The Two Fridas and The Broken Column explored identity, physical suffering, and emotional resilience.
❤️ TWO ARTISTS, ONE STORMY ROMANCE
Kahlo married celebrated Mexican muralist Diego Rivera in 1929, beginning a passionate but troubled relationship. They divorced in 1939 and remarried in 1940, while each continued pursuing a distinctive artistic career.
🌺 FLOWERS, COLORS & MEXICAN PRIDE
Frida embraced traditional Mexican clothing, elaborate hairstyles, and colorful accessories as expressions of her identity. Although artists associated her paintings with Surrealism, she emphasized that her unusual images came from her own lived reality.
🌟 THE ARTIST WHO NEVER FADED
Kahlo held her first solo exhibition in Mexico in 1953 and attended its opening while lying in a bed brought into the gallery. After her death in 1954, her reputation continued growing, and her Blue House eventually became a museum celebrating her extraordinary life and art.
