Humbert Wolfe

January 5, 1885 – January 5, 1940 • aged 55 • British Poet & Civil Servant

✒️ Poet & Public Servant

Humbert Wolfe was a British poet, writer, and civil servant who combined a successful government career with a remarkably productive literary life. He wrote poetry, criticism, essays, and other works and became a well known figure in British literary circles between the two world wars.

🌍 Born in Milan

Wolfe was born in Milan, Italy, and came from a Jewish family. He grew up in England and was educated at Bradford Grammar School before studying at Wadham College, Oxford. He later trained in law before entering Britain’s civil service.

🏛️ A Career in Government

Wolfe joined the British civil service in 1908 and eventually rose to senior positions in the Ministry of Labour. His government work and literary career developed side by side, giving him an unusual public life that combined administration with poetry and criticism.

📚 A Prolific Writer

Wolfe published numerous collections of poetry during the 1920s and 1930s. His books included London Sonnets, Requiem, and The Unknown Goddess. His writing ranged from serious lyrical poetry to witty and satirical observations about society and human behavior.

🎼 Poetry Set to Music

Wolfe’s lyrical writing attracted composers as well as readers. Several of his poems were set to music, including works by prominent British composers, helping his words reach audiences beyond the printed page.

📝 Wit That Outlived Him

Although many of Wolfe’s books are less widely read today, individual poems and quotations have endured. His writing could be sharp, humorous, and skeptical, and his lines about writers, critics, politics, and everyday human behavior continue to appear in collections of literary quotations.
