Maya Angelou was an American poet, memoirist, performer, and civil rights activist whose writing explored identity, family, racism, resilience, and dignity. Her distinctive voice made her one of the most widely recognized American writers of the 20th century.
🌳 Growing Up in Stamps
Angelou was born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri. Much of her childhood was spent with her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. Those early experiences in the segregated South later became an important part of her autobiographical writing.
🐦 I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Angelou became internationally known with the 1969 publication of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The memoir recounts her childhood and early adolescence and became the first in a series of autobiographical books through which she chronicled different periods of her life.
✊ Civil Rights Work
Angelou was active in the civil rights movement and worked with both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Her experiences as an activist became part of a much broader life that also included work as a singer, dancer, actress, journalist, teacher, and writer.
🇺🇸 A Presidential Inauguration
In 1993, Angelou read her poem “On the Pulse of Morning” at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton. The nationally televised appearance introduced her work to an enormous audience and made her the first poet to deliver an inaugural poem since Robert Frost in 1961.
🏅 A Lasting Literary Legacy
Angelou published poetry, essays, memoirs, children’s books, and other works during a career that stretched across decades. In 2011, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the highest civilian honors in the United States.
