Amy Sherald is an American painter celebrated for portraits of Black Americans. Her paintings often combine vivid clothing and backgrounds with figures rendered in grayscale, creating a distinctive style that makes her work immediately recognizable.
🖌️ Georgia Beginnings
Sherald was born in Columbus, Georgia. She studied painting at Clark Atlanta University and later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, a city that became important to the development of her artistic career.
🏆 A Career Changing Prize
In 2016, Sherald won the National Portrait Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition for her painting Miss Everything (Unsuppressed Deliverance). She became the first woman and the first African American to win the competition, bringing her work much wider attention.
👗 Painting Michelle Obama
Sherald was selected to paint the official portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Unveiled in 2018, the portrait brought Sherald international recognition and became one of her best known works.
