Overview
Queen Latifah, born Dana Elaine Owens, is an American rapper, singer, actress, and producer whose career spans music, television, and movies. She emerged as an important voice in hip hop before building an equally successful acting career.
New Jersey Beginnings
Latifah was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in East Orange. She chose the name Latifah while young and later adopted Queen Latifah as her stage name. Her debut album, All Hail the Queen, arrived in 1989 and included the single “Ladies First.”
U.N.I.T.Y.
Her 1993 album Black Reign included “U.N.I.T.Y.,” one of her signature songs. The recording addressed disrespect toward women and violence against women and earned Queen Latifah a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
From Music to Acting
Latifah became a television favorite as Khadijah James on the sitcom Living Single, which ran from 1993 to 1998. She also developed a substantial film career with roles in Set It Off, Bringing Down the House, Last Holiday, Hairspray, and Girls Trip.
Chicago & Bessie
Her performance as Matron “Mama” Morton in the 2002 musical Chicago earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She later portrayed blues legend Bessie Smith in the television film Bessie, earning additional acclaim for both her acting and producing work.
