United Airlines Flight 93

September 11, 2001 • 40 Passengers & Crew • Shanksville, Pennsylvania

Flight 93

United Airlines Flight 93 was one of four commercial airliners hijacked during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Boeing 757 was traveling from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, California, with 33 passengers and seven crew members, along with four hijackers.

The Hijacking

Flight 93 took off at 8:42 a.m., about 25 minutes later than scheduled because of airport traffic. At approximately 9:28 a.m., four al Qaeda terrorists seized control of the aircraft and turned it southeast toward Washington, D.C.

Calls From the Plane

Passengers and crew members made telephone calls to family, friends, and authorities and learned that other hijacked aircraft had already struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. They realized that Flight 93 was also part of the coordinated attack and that their aircraft was likely intended to strike another target.

They Fought Back

After discussing what they had learned, passengers and crew members decided to fight back. At approximately 9:57 a.m., they began an attempt to regain control of the aircraft. Their struggle with the hijackers continued during the final minutes of the flight.

Shanksville, Pennsylvania

At 10:03 a.m., Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. All 33 passengers, seven crew members, and four hijackers aboard the aircraft died. The passengers’ and crew members’ actions prevented the hijackers from reaching Washington.

A Field of Honor

The United States Capitol is believed to have been the hijackers’ intended target. Today, Flight 93 National Memorial preserves the crash site and honors the 40 passengers and crew members. The Wall of Names bears each of their names, while the surrounding landscape serves as a permanent place of remembrance.
