Calvin and Hobbes

Comic Strip • Created by Bill Watterson • 1985–1995

Overview

Calvin and Hobbes is an American comic strip created by cartoonist Bill Watterson. It follows the adventures of Calvin, an imaginative six-year-old boy, and Hobbes, his stuffed tiger, who appears to Calvin as a living companion and best friend.

Calvin & Hobbes

Calvin is energetic, curious, mischievous, and blessed with an enormous imagination. Hobbes is often more thoughtful and practical, although he eagerly joins Calvin’s adventures. To everyone else, Hobbes appears to be an ordinary stuffed tiger.

An Imaginary World

Calvin’s imagination constantly transforms everyday life. He becomes the space explorer Spaceman Spiff, the superhero Stupendous Man, and the private detective Tracer Bullet. A cardboard box can become a time machine, duplicator, transmogrifier, or whatever else his latest adventure requires.

The Supporting Cast

Recurring characters include Calvin’s parents, his classmate and neighbor Susie Derkins, his teacher Miss Wormwood, school bully Moe, and babysitter Rosalyn. Susie frequently finds herself dealing with Calvin’s schemes, arguments, snowball attacks, and unusual games.

More Than Jokes

The strip mixed slapstick humor and childhood adventures with surprisingly thoughtful observations about imagination, education, family life, consumerism, art, human nature, and the adult world. Watterson often used Calvin’s questions and conversations with Hobbes to explore larger ideas.

Legacy

Calvin and Hobbes debuted on November 18, 1985, and ended on December 31, 1995. Watterson chose to conclude the strip while it remained enormously popular. Its humor, artwork, imagination, and memorable friendship have helped it remain one of the most celebrated comic strips ever created.
